Looking for some ideas on inexpensive Scotland vacations, prefer unguided?

Travel Info
Is the weather too cold in October or March? Would prefer to go at my own pace without a guide. Any good links for smaller hotels or inns. I would probably start by flying into London, hopping a bus to north England, tour Hadrians Wall and after getting to Glascow rent a car and tour the Scottish countryside.

Travel Tips
The weather isn't unreasonably cold in October or March. There are some good "backpacker's" places to stay that are very inexpensive all over Scotland. It might be worth looking into a bus ticket where you hop-on/hop-off wherever you like, not a guided tour by any means (if you're not keen on driving over there). I did that when I was a student. Good places to see are Edinburgh (just for the castle), Oban, Inverness, Stirling, Isle of Skye (for the hairy coos), Loch Lomand, etc...and Glasgow!! (my in-laws live there and I visit once a year) Inexpensive good times in Glasgow include the gallery of modern art, st. George's Square, all the green space and parks, too much to name! oh...and CELTIC FC (if you're into soccer)
