Activities in Germany during Christmas? |
Travel Info I'm planning a trip to Germany over Christmas. I know most things will be shut down, but can someone recommend some activities? There are three people traveling with me. Travel Tips Obviously, this largely depends on where you are going! The time around Christmas is normally very family oriented. Presents are handed out on the evening of December 24th, family visits happen on December 25th and 26th then. Everyone then rushes into shops and stores on the 27th, the day when shops open again (all of them are closed from midday of the 24th onwards, except for 24-hrs garages or train stations). Things cool down a little bit before December 31st, New Year's Eve. So, if you're in Germany before Dec 24th and including, definitely visit one of the Christmas markets and enjoy a glass of mulled wine. Most major towns have more than one market, in Munich, for example, specialised on different topics, from art to fun. Nuremberg is the most famous one, Dresden certainly too, Salzburg, though in Austria, is lovely! If you like to go partying on those days, that will not be an issue! During those days and despite the family focus of that holiday - or because of that? who knows - most clubs and bars are open in the evening hours, even on December 24th. Museums etc. have varying opening hours, unfortunately you need to check that locally. December 24th and 25th are rather likely to be closed. Nevertheless, most tourist attractions should be accessible during that time. However, why not kick back and relax? Look for a nice hotel at a location where it is likely to snow, definitely with a fireplace in the lobby. Let your hosts have their Christmas eve celebrations while you drink your Riesling that you have cleverly bought right before the shops closed. And the wonderful gingerbread cookies! |
