What do you think of Belgium??? |
Travel Info People / Landscape / Weather / Cities / anything you want Travel Tips I am an American, but I studied in Belgium several years ago. I loved it so much that I consider it my "second homeland." First, there's the cuteness of the country. It's so compact that you can get from one side to the other very quickly. Great train connections make it even easier. I lived in Brabant Wallon, in a little college town off the main train line from Brussels to Namur; however, I easily visited Oostende, Gent, Brugge, and all sorts of other places across the country. Second, there's great diversity: beautiful medieval cities like Gent and Brugge, gritty seaside haunts like Oostende and De Haan, scenic forested cities like Namur and Dinant. And don't leave out Brussels: a very hip and happening city with a vibrant, multinational character. Third, there's the food and drink. The four food groups of Belgium are waffles, chocolate, fries and beer. If you like any of these things, then you'll love Belgium. The waffles have sugar cubes baked inside, so you don't need syrup, just warm, melt-in-your-mouth gooeyness. The chocolate is absurdly good, made from the best ingredients and filled with all sorts of tasty sweets. The fries are perfect; after all, the Belgians invented them. Every town has a fry stand where a little old man or woman slathers one of eight billion different (And delicious) sauces over your hot, steaming pile of potatoes. And the beer. Oh, Lord, the beer. No country better expresses its creativity than Belgium and its beers. Every possible kind exists, from strong ales brewed by secretive monks in the Wallonian highlands, to fresh lagers, to fruity lambics, to white beers and nutty beers, and... I'm so thirsty!!! Belgium doesn't have a lot of Really Important Sights. Its museums are merely adequate. The food is comfort food, not award-winning haute cuisine. But if you want to have a good time with friendly people and to experience Europe the way it's meant to be lived, you must go to Belgium! Others I love Belgium. My husband and I honeymooned in Ghent and Brugge and did a stop over in Brussels. Beautiful country and the people were wonderful. We were there in April and the weather was mild. *sigh* I want to take my daughter there someday. Belgium sucks! But I love Holland. never been there. belgium is the centre of all evil, The EU great but a small country Nice architecture and beautiful scenery but too many Belgians! |
