Advice on Brussels? |
Travel Info I'm spending a few days in Brussels next spring. Since I'm a female traveling alone, I'd like to know which areas to avoid ahead of time. I've traveled alone many times and I've never had problems. But this is my first time in Brussels and I'd rather stay out of shady areas. What places should be avoided at night or at any other time? Travel Tips In few days you'll be busy to see the "must see" places in Brussels : Grand Place, the St. Michel Cathedral, the statue of Manneken Piss (a litlle boy), the Atomium, the Justice Palais, many places full of history and charm. So, don't worry, it will be just great, enjoy your trip ! Others NO SPECIAL AREAS THAT YOU WOULD BE AFFECTED BY NEAR YOUR HOTEL Brussels is pretty safe, no worries! The only place I would not go is around the North Station (train) but then again there is just no reason to go there. Make sure you go to the Grand Place, Manenkenpis and rue des Bouchers. Also if you can, go to L'Atomium. There is a really fun American Bar if you are feeling homesick, it is in the SAS hotel close to the Grand Place (at least it use to be 10 years ago!) Have fun! My advice for any tourist who comes to Brussels is simple: don't waste too much time in Brussels! What you want to see is historic city centers? Authenticity? Exciting but safe nightlife? Brussels has a small old quarter, around which zillions of tour groups duly perambulate, but other towns are much more interesting (and welcoming) to foreign visitors. If you have two days, spend two hours in Brussels and the rest in Brugge (Bruges). If you have another night, spend it in Gent (Ghent). More time still? Antwerpen (Belgium's biggest city) and medieval college town Leuven are still nicer than Brussels. Brugge, Gent, Antwerp and Leuven are also much cheaper, and very safe at night. Oh, and Brugge-Leuven is only 90 mins by train. My family have been receiving visitors from around the world since 1961. It is their opinions I am conveying to you. Get a guidebook on Belgium, not only Brussels. Brussels is not an island, and Belgium is just a midget state. |
