Rather than buying single tickets it is easier to have a travel card which allows you to use both the buses and the underground.

I think if you only want to use one of the methods there is a thing called a carnet which is a book of single journeys.

Just a note of caution stay away from Black Taxis as they charge before you even start the journey.
Also mini cabs please do not get them unless they show you identity a card with the name and company,unfortunately there have been cases of people being attacked when using a mini cab or even disappearing.
