Travel Info What is the shorter route around birmingham? m42/m5 west or m42/m6 east? Travel Tips In my experience M42/M6 East is the shortest by distance but in busy times the M42/M5 West is longer distance but usually less hassle. Others I use the toll road, top speed for me is 145mph and not pushing it I drove round Birmingham in the dark and was totally confounded with all the East, North, South and West signs. Roads that on the map look as though they're going West and East are sign posted North and South! No blummin' town names to give you a clue. Amazingly I got in the right lanes (more by good luck than judgement) and ended up on the right road out of Birmingham. On the way back, in the light, it was just as bad. Purely because of the direction (N.S.E.W.) signs. If I were you, I wouldn't bother about worrying which road to take, I would learn off by heart which direction you want to aim in, or you'll end up on your way to London, instead of Cardiff! going north in the morning i use the m42 then the m5 after checking traffic reports. Returning south I use the toll road to avoid congestion. Shortest is the m6 but unless it is 2am better to avoid. live close to m42 |
