I visa is a permission to enter a country that is granted to foreigners. I will use the example of foreigners entering the United States. Americans can not obtain visas to enter the United States. They are simply admitted. I know this because the Department of State computer system that is used to process visas requires 鈥渃ountry of citizenship鈥?as a field. In the drop down menu, United States is not listed. So, it would be possible to list 鈥淎merican鈥?as the citizenship of a visa applicant. Some could say, 鈥淲ell what if I have dual citizenship?鈥? Sure, theoretically a person with American and French citizenship could obtain an American visa in his French passport, but this would be a waste of time and money.

The most basic American visa is simply a stamp. In order to enter the United States without a paper visa, you have to be from one of 27 Visa Waiver Program countries. While I am not going to get into the details of the VWP, the basics are that if you are white you probably don鈥檛 need a visa and if you aren鈥檛 you need a visa. So upon arrival at the airport, VWP citizens that wish to stay in the United States for a tourist holiday less than 90 days simply get a stamp in their passport which serves as a visa.

Otherwise, a visa is a piece of paper about the size of a passport that is affixed into the visa applicant鈥檚 passport. It is a prior permission from the embassy in the applicant鈥檚 place of residence to enter the United States. However, it is not a guarantee.
