I always took the train I believe it was about 12 pounds round trip.
The train is really the best way. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from London, barring any delays which are very few and far between. You can take a train from Victoria Station usually, and it doesn't cost much at all. Between 10 and 20 pounds. Train station in Brighton is a good distance from the sea and the Royal Pavilion, but not so great that you can't walk it.
