What are some nice old pubs in Cardiff? |
Travel Info Can anyone recommend any nice old pubs in central Cardiff? Nothing noisy or too smoky, but something with nice Victorian architecture, or older, which serves food. If there is a JD Wetherspoons pub converted from a bank, like in Glasgow and Edinburgh, that would do. Travel Tips Dunrobin - my Boyfriend works for a pub called The Albany, its on Donald Street off Albany Road in Roath. It has twice won of the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) award for best Cardiff pub and is a real traditional friendly little local. It was also used to shoot some scenes for the upcoming Doctor Who series!!! It is an old Victorian Coaching House, very traditional with a bar and a lounge and a beer garden. It was built in the 1890s I beleive. They serve food up to 2.30pm every day but not Sundays. Very nice food too. You'll be assured of a warm welcome there!!!! Please drop in and see everyone!! And have a pint of Brains SA (Skull Attack) or whatever guest ale they have on. PM me if you want more info. Don't go to Wetherspoons you'll get ripped off and swamped by students. If you fancy somethign a bit more country pub-ish you can try the Maen Llwyd (near Rudry, Caerphilly - just about 10-12 miles out of Cardiff) - thats lovely, serves delicious food and is really old and traditional. I think thats what the previous poster was referring to. Nice selection of real ales. Others Sod Cardiff,,, come to Scotland,, its a lot better. There are 2 Wetherspoons in Cardiff. The biggest one which is called the Prince Of Wales used to be a porno theatre. I'm not joking either! The other is called the Gatekeeper, which is a better pub anyway! And isn't far from the millenium stadium theres a nice pub called the manlledwydd near cefn mabley (spelling isnt right) nice setting aswell. a bit futher towards newport and you have the Ruppera Arms Bassealeg (highly recommended) |
