What should I see when I visit Cleveland, Ohio? |
Travel Info I will have a group of teenagers with me so all suggestions should be age appropriate and group-friendly. Travel Tips Cleveland is actually set up very nicely for visitors, and there is plenty to do; music, plenty of museums, history, dining, entertainment, sports, etc. Of course the main tourist attractions in Cleveland is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and sports teams, but there is so much more to see other than that. The one unfortunate thing about the Rock Hall is that admission is a little steep. I'm not sure what prices are now currently, but check out the website, and if you are staying in a hotel ask about Rock Hall packages that include discount tickets. For a litle downtown walking tour to see the major sights and for photo opportunities. I would reccomend starting at Tower City Center, which is a huge complex of buildings all connected that include hotels, offices, a food court, rapid train lines' central station, shops, fountains, and the city's landmark skyscraper. There aren't a whole lot of shops in the center these days, but the center is still nonetheless beautiful and out-of-towners I have taken all thought it was beautiful. Exit through the front of Terminal Tower and take a right down Euclid Avenue. When you exit Terminal Tower you are Public Square which is the center of the city with the tallest skyscrapers surrounding the four parks. Down Euclid Avenue you will pass East Fourth Street (an up and coming entertainment district with the House of Blues venue and restaurant as an anchor). Turn left into the Hyatt Old Arcade building and pass through the country's first shopping mall. It is defunct of worthy retailers but it is a stunning building built at the turn of the century and modelled after the Vittorio Emanuel in Milan. After you walk through to the other side you will be at Superior Avenue. Cross the street and take a right. You will see the Cleveland Public Library building which you are free to walk in and check out. Its really beautiful. Take a left on E.6th. At the corner of E.6th and Superior is the Federal Reserve Bank (one of twelve branches nationwide that our country's total finnancial system is based on). Take a left on St. Clair and you will be in the center of the civic center of Cleveland; the Mall. Take a right and walk down the mall and then a right on Lakeside Avenue. You will see the controversial Free Stamp Sculpture on your left and then you will hit E.9th. Take a left and go to the end and you will see the Rock Hall. If you aren't planning on going in to see the museum, at least take pictures from the outside. Its a stunning structure and designed by leading architect I.M Pei who did the entire remodelling and expansion of the Lourve. The pyramid is his signature. After the Rock Hall, you can walk back to Terminal Tower, or take the Rapid waterfront line in front of the Rock Hall back to Tower City or straight through to Shaker Square (a really old and beautiful Georgian style square with good restaurants, a great historic and restored movie theater, and some interesting shops. Or at Tower City you could transfer to the Red line in the airport direction and get off at W.25th Street. This is a really cool up and coming neighborhood and the West Side Market is a DEFINATE must-see. The West Side Market Cafe inside is also a really really good sit-down place for lunch with great food and great prices. Take a right out of the market and there are some cool shops and cafes, or go straight to see the famous Great Lakes Brewery or Talkies Coffee Bar. The second major area worth visiting in Cleveland is University Circle. This is the cultural, medical, and educational district in the city. To get there you could take I-90 East from downtown to MLK Blvd, where you head South into the Circle. The Museum of Art, Botannical Gardens, and others are located here. The lagoon in front of the Museum of Art is really pretty and good. Close by University Circle is Little Italy on Mayfield Rd. at the intersection of Murray Hill. Get some pizza at Mamma Santa's and dessert at Presti's, and enjoy all the shops and art galleries. For dinner; I would recommend the Warehouse District or Gateway Neighborhood downtown. The Warehouse District is a really trendy neighborhood just West of Public Square along St. Clair, W.6th and W.9th. This is more of a young adult area and more pricey, but its still really cool. Gateway Neighborhood around the sports areans have some fun, casual, and inexpensive restaurants around the intersection of Prospect and Huron. My favorite is Pannini's; definately a Cleveland favorite. Playhouse Square downtown is the second largest theater district in the country, and you might want to consider a show or something as an evening activity. You might want to consider city tours given by Lolley the Trolley, or a nice lake cruise by the Goodtime III. Also, Yahoo Travel has some good reviews of Cleveland and things to do. Not too far, but outside the city are the region's best shopping areas; Crocker Park west of Cleveland in Westlake, and Beachwood Place and Legacy Village east of Cleveland. Crocker Park is one of those outdoor lifestyle centers, and really good for teens. Its movie theater, shops, and restaurants are so popular with teens in the area. Coventry (like New York's Greenwich Village) also near University Circle is good to go, as well as the quaint but trendy Chagrin Falls. I hope this helps! I think the city is great, and hope you have a great experience. One thing to keep in mind is that downtown Cleveland is in transition. Its safe, fun and relatively clean, but major multi-billion dollar improvement development projects have just been started, and they won't be complete for the next seven years or so. Definately come back then to see the city completely different.
