Is it illegal to travel to Cuba if you are an USA citizen? |
Travel Info I realize the USA has an economic sanction egainst Cuba, but there are options that let you purchase vacations in Cuba that are all inclusive and are paid to a company in Canada or Mexico; thus there is no payment by a USA citizen to Cuba. I know this is a round-about technique, but is it legal? Travel Tips I copied this from a U.S. government site. You can go there yourself and read all about it... "The Regulations require that persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction be licensed to engage in any travel-related transactions related to travel to, from, and within Cuba. Transactions related to tourist travel are not licensable. This restriction includes tourist travel to Cuba from or through a third country such as Mexico or Canada. U.S. law enforcement authorities have increased enforcement of these regulations at U.S. airports and pre-clearance facilities in third countries. Travelers who fail to comply with Department of Treasury regulations will face civil penalties and criminal prosecution upon return to the United States." It's more illegal now than ever to go there and you can thank the Bush administration for that. However, I do know someone who has gone recently and got away with it by tearing out pages stamped with cuban visas from his passport?? Don't ask me how he got away with that. you only live once right? Source(s): http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw... Other Travel Tips if u have a passport sure you can well i think :| | I'm not sure. Maybe it's legal or illegal 50% 50% YES, it is illegal for US citizens to visit Cuba. The State Department usually gives exemptions to people with relatives in Cuba or travel for approved reasons, like to study. Cuba also has some restrictions on who can or can't come in. There are no direct flights between the US and Cuba. Those who choose to go anyway, must make arrangements with a travel agency outside of the country. Here in Florida, with the large Cuban population, most people travel to the Bahamas, Jamaica, or Mexico, then transfer to flights to Havana. Unless you cause trouble, get arrested, or attempt illegal activities, the US government will probably not prosecute you for going on a vacation package.... BUT, they could..keep that in mind. Aside from what the above mentioned said, you can ask that they not stamp your passport (they typically oblige since you are bringing income into the country), but I think I'd be too paranoid to go. I have no idea. It's about a 50% chance either way |
