Does anyone have any tips for travelling to Varadero?

Travel Info
I'm going to resort for a week, but I was just wondering if anyone has any tips for me -- either for being safe and sanitary (should I be cautious with food and water there) or just with what tours or activities I should participate in.

Any guidance would be fantastic. Many thanks!

Travel Tips
I was in Varadero last January. We stayed at Club Amigo. The food in the hotels is VERY safe - they have very very strict government guidelines.

You can use the tap water for brushing your teeth and washing your face etc., but the hotel restaurants will give you treated water that is safe to drink - and it you don't have to worry about hepatitis or anything - its just that the local water may upset your tummy.

Varadero is a very small city, and it is safe and clean. During our time there, we were only bothered by one old lady for some money. Its very eye opening to see how they live.

MAKE SURE YOU GO TO YOUR HOTEL ORIENTATION - they give you a ton of info. The good thing about activities is that you book them through your guide at the hotel, and if you miss it, or don't feel like going after all, your money is refunded. The only thing I found disappointing was that the ocean was freezing (January is the coldest month there) and there was no water life - so keep that in mind if the activity described to you is for snorkeling, etc - its not the best month to do it in. You may also want to bring a sweater for night time, as it gets a little cool outside.

These were my only complaints:
There are 3 buses that travel up and down the main road (like I said, Varadero is very small) - the buses are the cheapest method of getting around and going to the market, etc. - but the buses are really really crowded. Depending how far up the road you are staying, it would be my advice to take the very first bus of the day into town. Also, budget for alot of tip money......it gets a little annoying but it is CONSTANT. Everyone from hotel employees, guides and bus drivers will ask for a tip. Everyone runs on "Cuba Time" which means - whenever they feel like waking up from their nap - so if you tip them they *may* try a little harder.

But - other than that, it is really about the sun and the fun, and I'm sure you will have a great time!

Others
Leave all valuables at home, get your shots from the Dr. for Hepatitis, don't go exploring outside the resort, try to avoid anything that has local water in it and don't try the drugs (most important).
Well, Varadero is very protected and secure. Actually anywhere in Cuba is safe, and people are really nice and hospitalary, you can trust them. They might ask you for money or objects they can't buy but they never rob. No problems with food and water either. don't worry and ejoy your trip!!!!
