Six months to one year in cuba? How much money will I need?

Travel Info
Moving to cuba in the next six months, was trying to get a general estimate about how much its gonna cost to live there for six months to a year? Obviously my major expense will be housing and food. I wiil pretty much do local transport, and although Im used to rural living and would like to live as much as the locals do as possible, I will need consistent electricity and secure housing. Lots of the casa particulares in Cuba though, at least the legal ones are pretty expensive (100-125US a week!!! I might as well live in the states!) Any answers/suggestions concerning actual living expenses in Cuba will be apprecated.

Travel Tips
I do not know where you are planning to stay, if in Havana or somewhere more rural. My husband is from the Cienfuegos area and the government does not pay for his family's home. They own their own home. If you want to find an affordable "casa particular" my immediate thoughts are to first go to Cuba, maybe stay in a hotel or more expensive "casa particular" and look around in the rural areas for families with large homes and rooms to rent. My husband's family has a large home with extra rooms. They currently do not rent any out, but many people in the area do. You just need to get out of the regular "tourist" areas.
If you plan to live simply, between $7-$10k US would definitely last you. We send roughly $50-$100 a month to his family, and while they do not pay rent, it pays for everything else and they always seem to have extra. There may be the electricity problem in "casa particulares" as the Government frequently shuts off power in intervals. Although his family has told us that recently the frequency of "power outages" has cut down. Hope I was of some help. I do not know the prices of all the "casa particulares" around the region..sorry.

Sounds like you'll need to get a job there.
I don't know how much exactly you will need, but if you are going to live in Cuba, I recommend you get a room in a private home. *casas particulares* It would be a whole lot cheaper than a hotel. Be careful about what you say or do while over there, because if they think you are anti-government, it could land you in jail. The dollar is Cuba is a bit less in value than the national peso. good luck
I would like to know if you have permission from the Cuban gov't or some special licence to go live in Cuba for that length of time....you can't just up and move there!!! You could end up in big trouble.
