It is due to many things that started with Eisenhower in 1960 a partial economic embargo to cease sugar purchases,end oil delivery and various other things. In 1963 the Kennedy administration prohibited travel to Cuba and made financial and commercial transactions with Cuba illegal for U.S. citizens. In 1977 President Carter drops the ban on travel to Cuba and on U.S. citizens spending dollars in Cuba. In 1982 The Reagan Administration reestablishes the travel ban, prohibiting U.S. citizens from spending money in Cuba. In 1996 President Clinton signs the Helms-Burton Act which imposed penalties on foreign companies doing business in Cuba, permitted U.S. citizens to sue foreign investors who made use of American-owned property seized by the Cuban government, and denied entry into the U.S. to such foreign investors. In 2003 President George W. Bush established the Committee for assistance to a Free Cuba, and further enforced the ban on travel to the island. In 2004 President Bush extends family travel restrictions as follows: visits to immediate family in Cuba only once every three years. 14-day limits on family trips to Cuba, a 44-pound luggage weight limit and new rules on what can be brought back into the country. Travelers may spend only $300, including a maximum of $50 per day. And money may be sent only to immediate family members. Others All of this history tells me American foreign policy encouraged Fidel Castro's alliance with non-aligned states in the U.N, China and Russia. Pushing so hard has the opposite effect of what's desired. Travel restrictions for Americans punishes them for disputes & issues between the U.S. and Cuba. Yes it is true. Yes its due to the cold war. However, I would think its about time now to reduce those restrictions. Yes, there have been travel restrictions along with other sanctions on Cuba for 40 years. It started with the cold war but over time the US has normalized relations with Russia, China, and even sent aid to North Korea. The only reason that the restrictions have gone on this long is politics. The exiled Cuban community Florida is a large voting block and the source of large campaign contributions. They have maintained an irrational hate for Castro. I have lived through it Yes, it is. Even though the Cold War has now been over for more than a decade, the U.S. policy of sanctions and pressures against Cuba continues unabated, though it is clearly obsolete and counterproductive. |
