Why are there are so many old-school American vehicles in Cuba?

Travel Info
I have always wondered why there are so many old American vehicles in Cuba? Vehicles, that would be worth several thousand dollars in the United States if they were in good condition. Were the Cuban people once rich or something? As many of these cars were considered prestigous back in their day.

Travel Tips
there used to be many Americans in Cuba during the Baptista regime, and they had taken cars there with them. The Cuban people had a "rich" society and an extremely "poor" society. The rich people had the American cars as well. Since the Embargo and Castro's regime, there have been no imports from America on the island. There are new vehicles available to tourists, but they are not American made cars. The people of Cuba have old cars that are available to them, and fix them with whatever they can. Most of the "classics" you see in Cuba have very little left of their original engine. The extreme difference between the "rich" & the "poor" of Cuba is one of the reasons the people & the US backed Castro at first as his idea was to create more equality. Which he did in a way... now everyone is poor !!

The U.S. has had a trade embargo with Cuba since the 60's when Castro let the Russians put a couple of nukes there aimed at us. Since then a lot of our friends have participated in this embargo and Cuba has been stuck in the 60's since then. Make sense?
