How do I get to see the Delhi of the Mughals?

Travel Info
Recently read City of Djinn and am fascinated with the Delhi that he talks about. What would be the bext way to get to all the places he talks about in a short 7 day trip? Also want to do Ajmer. Possible to stay there? How do I make arrangements beforehand?

Travel Tips
If you want to see the Mughal Delhi i suggest you go to the old Delhi or the walled city of Delhi. Originally this was the city of Delhi and the new Delhi area is an extension of this(and today the main part of Delhi). in old Delhi be sure to see the red fort. The walls of this fort go all around old Delhi which is why it is called the walled city. next you can go to the Jama masjid which is still the biggest mosque in Delhi. and if if you are not vegetarian do not miss this restaurant called Karim's. This dates back to the days of the mughal empire. It was started in the days of either the rulers Shah jahan or Aurangzeb. The recipes used are still the same. You should go for the chicken/mutton korma with tandoori roti. This is all the info i can give . for more info i strongly recommend the lonely planet guide book of India.
But while in Delhi, don't even think of staying in old Delhi. stay somewhere in central or south of Delhi. take a cab to old Delhi. Most cab drivers will also know places of attraction. except for the monuments rest of the old Delhi is extremely dirty and crowded. I suggest do not carry many things. only a small wallet with some cash. don't expect credit card to work here.take care of your belongings and bathe after coming back to your hotel. be sure to purchase lonely planet.
