What is the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and why is it called that?

Travel Tips
The Royal Mile is one of two thoroughfares on either side of the valley in Edinburgh (The other is Princes Street).

The Royal Mile runs along the ridged backbone of the picturesque Old Town. The Royal Mile, once jammed with sellers' booths and where people both lived and worked, was the center of city life.

The Royal Mile is named so because it ends at Holyrood Palace, where the rooms of Mary, Queen of Scots, are still preserved. It is also the official Edinburgh residence of the British monarch. So you see, it is very royal indeed! Source(s): Encyclopedia Britannca

Other Travel Tips
The Royal Mile is otherwise known as the High Street. It runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace and hence the name is a mile long. Royalty frequently travelled down this road from Palace to Castle. Along this you have several tourist attractions such as Camera Obscura, The High Court, St Giles Church, John Knox's house(though not proven he actually stayed there - it was the Jenners of the time)
