Anyone from Edinburgh, Scotland? |
Travel Info Hi there, I am planning to visit Edinburgh, Scotland in Oct.Wondering if there's anyone from there?Well, I am doing lots of research right now (will be travelling alone), but really appreciate first hand tips from people who live there. : ) By the way, what is the ideal duration of time to visit Edinburgh? I will be staying in Cupar, so there will be some travelling to be done daily to go to the city, not sure how long though. Thanks! Travel Tips Hi, welcome to Scotland in advance! Cupar is probably around 50 miles from Edinburgh but is on the main railway line. Edinburgh is great - loads to see and do and you could easily spend a week exploring the city itself. Apart from all the well-known tourist attractions like Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Dungeons and This Dynamic Earth to name but a few, just walking around is a treat for the senses. Dean Village (in the city centre) has a lovely canalside walk, the Royal Mile is totally atmospheric and the Grassmarket pubs are great. I'd advise a trip on an open-topped bus to get your bearings and decide what to see more of later. The buses leave from just outside the Waverley Centre on Princes Street and don't need pre-booked. And DO NOT miss a ghost walk - brilliant fun! Nearer Cupar, though, visit St. Andrews which is really beautiful, especially the beach.Yes, ask me anything you want to know. If you are staying in Cupar then it will take you about an hour to travel to Edinburgh by car, although you would be best to catch a train if you can. If you are travelling by car then try to avoid the rush hours because extensive queues can build up at the Forth Road Bridge. I reckon you will find plenty to do in Edinburgh for around a week. You may want to travel around the rest of Scotland while you are here. You probably only need 3 days to see the main tourist sights of Edinburgh. If you have more time Stirling Castle is great and will be a shorter trip for you. Day trips to the little coastal villages on the north shore of the Forth would be fun too. They do the best fish and chips in the world apparently. It could be quite cool in October, but last year we had warm(ish) weather right through into November. Try to see some of the local threatre/arts scene as Edinburgh is famous for it. It might be worth trying to stay in a hostel in town for at least one night so you can experience the night life. There are many hostels and much life :) Hope you have a good trip. Edinburgh resident I'm from Edinburgh, now residing in Los Angeles, California. I'm sure you will enjoy all that the great city has to offer. I would spend at least a week there, its a reasonably compact city, with good transportation. You could visit the Scottish Tourist Bureau, to get more details, on Accommodations, etc. Enjoy your trip. |
