Travel Tips
At least your Dog has to be marked with a transponder or with a tattoo (only valid till 2011) and an identity card. The dog needs an anti-rabies inoculation and you need an antibody volumetric analysis by an in the European Union accredited labor like鈥?br />

Be carefully because if the identity card or the ant-rabies inoculation are not state-approved at the border (airport) your dog will be rejected. In this case there will be three possibilities:
1.)The dog will be returned to the state of origin (US).
2.)The dog have to stay in quarantine (don鈥檛 know the number of weeks)鈥?br /> 3.)And as extreme appliance the dog have to be killed.

All of these three possibilities will be taken at your costs.

So if it鈥檚 only an short trip to Europe be sure that you really want to do this procedures.

Contact your Airline; they will give you detailed information of the things you鈥檒l need to bring your dog with you.

Others
It would probably be much easier and less stressful to leave your pet at home. But, if you must go with him/her, check to see if certain vaccinations or shots are needed and check with your airline's policies on carrying pets
Its quite a process to take your dog to Austria as others have outlined. My friend took three dogs as he was moving there and had to go through all the certificates and vaccines and have an ID chip implanted in them. If you are going on a short visit it might be more practical to leave the dog at a boarding kennel at home.
