The real (symbol: R$, ISO 4217 code: BRL, plural: reais) is the currency of Brazil.

Real which is the name of the earliest Brazilian currency from the Colonial period used by the first Portuguese settlers to arrive in the then New World, first printed by the Dutch in 1654 became Brazil's official currency in 1690 until 1942, when it was replaced by the cruzeiro (cruzeiro real) at a rate of 1000 r茅is = 1 cruzeiro.

The real was implemented back to be the legal tender on 1 July 1994, during the presidency of Itamar Franco as part of a broader plan to stabilize the Brazilian economy substituting the real cruzeiro .

The real has the following denominations:
Banknotes R$1, R$2, R$5, R$10, R$20, R$50, R$100
Coins 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 centavos, R$1 . Its subunit is centavo which is 1/100 of a real.

Currently the exchange rate is R$ 2.16801 per 1 US$. Note that the symbol R$ is used before the number and the decimal separator is a comma (,): R$ 123,45.
