How expensive is food/drink/shopping in Prague?

Travel Tips
Food: Varies from dirt cheap to American average,
Local dishes are often very cheap like Gulas(h). Food prices in general have more to do with their location. The closer you are to Old Town Square, the more expensive it is likely to be. Anything on the square is going to be very pricy and meant solely for rich tourists. Foreign restuarants can often cost more (Ambiente Italiano and Braziliero are both great buy pricy). There is McDonald and KFC, but it is absurd to go to Prague and eat that crap. Grocery stores are of course really cheap, Tesco is always full of a ton of people. Look out for an Albert, they're nicer and less nuts.

Drinking: Beer is cheap. Varies from 25-45 krowns (1-2 dollars). Anything over 45 is a total rip off even for a club or bar. Liquor is a bit more pricy, but still reasonable. Czechs love beer. They invented Pilsners and make great ones. Some more popular microbrews like Krusovice are great (go to Kosicka by old town square). Local liquor is Becherovka whick is pretty good and cheap too.

Shopping: Not cheap, especially in the touristy center. Basically, imported goods are around as much as they would cost in NY. Some worse some better.

Cabs- Try to online get taxi's from AAA taxi. I forget the number, but any bartender will let you know. They speak English, always use the meter and you won't get screwed. If you have to get another cab, make sure to agree on a cost before you get in (almost anywhere in Prague should be far less than 200kr), or make sure it's on the meter.

Housing (If you care): A great way to stay in Prague on a budget is to rent out an apartment (that will be beautiful) instead of a hotel/hostel. Source(s): Studied abroad last spring. It was amazing.

Other Travel Tips
There is virtually every type of retail store and restaurant in Prague. Prices are about average for Europe. There are lots of upscale shops and we were surprised at the price of cloths (higher than expected, since we were told that Germans go to Prague to shop for cloths on the weekends). We found only one grocery store and it was very crowded. Be sure to understand the exchange rate for the Crown. Taxis can be a total rip-off, so beware.
Visited Prague a couple of months ago. Arrived by train and stayed just outside the city center. Went to study the architecture and it is fantastic!
