Have you ever been in Macedonia? |
Travel Info Have you ever been in Macedonia? Travel Tips My family's from there, Gostivar to be exact. it's not nearly as dangerous as everyone makes it out to be. It was on the brink of a huge war back in the 90s, it's fine now since ethnic tension is down. Winter is great because there's ski resorts in Tetovo/Mavrovo area (one is called Popova Shapke) and if you go in the summer Lake Ohrid has a fabulous place to cool off not to mention how picturesque the countryside is! You'll usually find someone who speaks English in the major cities, especially the capital Skopje. Local currency is Denar and i would use that instead of Euro since the exchange rate is better. Others YES!!!! very nice place what about it Umm. Sorry. Nope. Never have. No, but it is usually a potential flash point for world wars. I went to Macedonia, they have a very nice lake, and its semi safe for camping. The cities are dangerous, almost the whole country is filled with 50% or more unemployment. Most foreigns get taken advantage of or, plain out robbed. It can be dangerous, if you have the ability to blend in that helps, however not many speak the language of Macedonia so they will understand fast that you are not from there. It is very cheap though to see, even if you are getting ripped by the locals, its still cheap. A pint of beer is like 10-25 cents. Hotels are like 10-15 dollars a night. It has some museams, but like I said its rather dangerous to be there. Croatia is equally cheap if you head to the eastern cities, and its a lot more safer. Modified 1 year ago Macedonia (mas-uh-doh-nee-uh, mas-uh-dohn-yuh) Republic in southeastern Europe on the west Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Yugoslavia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. Its capital and largest city is Skopje. Macedonia is part of a mountainous region of the Balkan Peninsula, also called Macedonia, that was once ruled by the Ottoman Empire and divided in 1912 among Greece, Bulgaria, and Serbia (later Yugoslavia). Greece has objected to the republic's adoption of the name Macedonia, which is also the name of a Greek province and which to the Greeks has been historically associated with Alexander the Great and ancient Greece. The country has been marked by conflict between minority ethnic Albanians and majority Slavs. |
