You can fly anywhere you want, without any ID. The bigger issues is whether you can lawfully enter your country of choice or return to your country of origin without the proper documentation. Playing "catch me if you can" with the immigration officials isn't a game I'd want to engage in. Why fool around with such a touchy issue? Get the proper documentation for your country, and you won't have any issues.

I've used a military id (i'm a contractor) as id in an airport, but i still needed a passport...
Generally an active duty military ID can be used for overseas travel in lieu of a passport.

However, I would take the necessary steps to get a passport as well.
I use military ID pretty much anytime I need to show ID. You need to also get a passport though. You must not have gone through some of the terrorism briefings, because then you'd remember what was said about using military ID's overseas...
