I lived in Spain for 12 years after flying over there on a lark. There were times I didn't have money, but never EVER suffered for it! People can be very friendly, and usually send you to the local cheap places. Stick to where the locals go, they always know where the goods are. If you're not fussy or dumb, you'll find many offers that are cheaper than in the US (if you are here) and of a higher quality, I might add.
Have fun!
Get a Eurail pass for sure, and stay in Youth Hostels. Depending on how long you stay, you probably won't spend even close to that much.
First of all, get the absolute cheapest plane tickets you can. What you have probably won't even cover that. But, with what little you have left over, I recommend getting a EuroRail pass, and staying in Hostels. They normally charge about 10-20 Euro a night, and they are great places to meet people. It's the cheapest way to see a lot of Europe.
But like I said, 1000 dollars probably won't even get you the plane ticket.
