Other than Paris, what's best in December? |
Travel Info We don't need to go to Paris, both my bf and I have been there many times, we'll spend just a few days in France somewhere between La Rochelle (where he lives) and the next country we'll head to for xmas (Germany, Czech Rep., Italy). Still, I want a few days to experience some part of France besides Paris! What would be best in December? When I consulted Lonely Planet it seemed to say that after Paris they most recommended either the Loire valley, Normandy, or Strasbourg (Nice and Provence was lower on their list). Normandy would be convenient if we were head for England but we're not, plus I doubt we can enjoy Monet's home as much in Dec. What about the Loire valley? Champagne area? what do you recommend in December? Travel Tips Well, even if it isn't on the way to Germany (but more on the way if you go to Italy), you could make a stop in Bordeaux which is not far from La Rochelle and a nice town since they built a tramway there, and really nicely decorated around Christmas time. If you go to Italy and opt for the motorway, you can also make a stop in Toulouse. Sorry, don't know much about the Loire valley nor Champagne area, just drove few times accross this area (and got lost one night there - saw many castles but wasn't in the mood ...). Without mentionning your wish to go to Germany, Italy ...., I would have recommend Carcassonne cit茅, but it's more on the way to Spain ! Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy your trip to France ! Others Wow, hows that! I was going to La Rochelle!! But I guess you've already spent a Christmas here with your bf? I moved here last year July and had Christmas here in LR last year and it was amazing! Even though its not as festive here in France (I come from New Zealand) we - my partner and our son - thoroughly enjoyed it. One of our favorites things, were to walk through town after dinner, starting at Place de Verdun heading down to the waterfront, and having an ice cream from Earnest in the freezing cold : ) BUT, if LR isn't an option and you just want to get away, why not try Toulouse? Its a beautiful city an I can only imagine how magical it would be during the Christmas period. Hope you have a fantastic Christmas!! Around La Rochelle, i recommend your Bordeaux and around Paris, Loire Valley (http://www.travel-france-vacation.com/we... Champagne and Burgundy (http://www.travel-france-vacation.com/ea... They are on the way from La Rochelle to Germany Brittany and Normandy will be probably less interesting in winter Go for Loire Valley and its castels and beatiful towns as Tours. It will be cold in December everywhere... |
