Here's my theory but it's mostly speculation...

Centuries ago people were referred to by where they were from. So you'll see de in a lot of people's name of French origin. "de Laire" would then be "of Laire" or "from Laire".
In modern French bau means beam (in a nautical sense) but I'm guessing that you would have to look at the meaning of this word in old French to know what it meant then as spellings and meanings of words change.

The short answer is that it doesn't mean anything though... it's a last name.
