Are French people usually friendly to French speaking Americans? |
Travel Info Are French people usually friendly to French speaking Americans? Travel Tips I can only answer the question from my own point of view and experience. I'd say YES, 'cause I'm just open-minded, friendly and I really like speaking with Americans. I'm so curious about your culture, country .... and I'm as happy to share words with you in French or in English. Most of the time the conversation turns into English to be a bit more "fluent" (depends on the level of French). I'm so fond of ethnology and cultural misunderstandings ..... You can also have to deal with French people who don't know a word of an other language but French, in that case, they might seem cold too, just because they have problems to understand you and know there's no other way for us to communicate with you ! But I must admit that some French people tend to be really stubborn on their point of view of Americans. Just people too proud and narrow minded, in one word : stupid ! And unluckily, like everywhere around the world, there are stupid people in France too !! ;-) Others they usually will speak to someone in their own language, but others they might appear cold until you get to known them Usually though sometime you get the occasional personality who is unforgiving.... it can get very frustrating when you are trying to appease the natives as a foreign traveler but you can get the right article correct- is it un table? une table? la table? le table? and all the while the french person knows you are talking about the table but yet, they look at you as if you are talking about the sky or the something completely insane. Othewise, I would say most folks are friendly towards us "stupid" french speaking Americans. Not from what I hear. I hear the french hate us americans! And they CAN tell if you are an american even if your speaking french, because we don't have that accent like they do! Whenever I've traveled to France, I've found the french people to be quite kind. If you're RESPECTFUL, you will have no problem. Time and time again, I've seen people that are too loud, too impatient, and just plain rude. The French are different from Americans. Being boisterous and demanding isn't going to fly. Asking for thing nicely will get you a long way. Don't worry about how much french you speak. I'm so-so and 7 times of out 10, I would greet someone in french only to have them respond in english. What it comes down to, like every other place in the world, if you're going to be a jerk, you're going to be treated like a jerk. Hope you have a fun trip. France is one of my favorite places on the planet. Several trips to Paris, Nice, Cannes Yes, it helps if you know the language. |
