You must have a full driving licence to drive drive on a UK licence. You will be breaking the law if you drive on a provisional licence. French prisone is not nice, don't risk it!

as long as you have a fully licenced driver sat next to you also you need to check that you are fully insured you may need additional insurance abroad, and have the correct L plates displayed. the co driver must have held their licence for three yrs and not be disqualified.

yes you can. No problem. If you are bringing your own car, you may have some adjustments to make to the mirrors and make sure you have a danger triangle in case of accident. Drivers in France have to have certain things done to their car. Check out the AA website and it should have a section to advise you on driving in France. If you are renting over there, then you have no worries. Have a nice time and driving the opposite side is easy - just follow everyone else!
