Is English generally understood in France?

Travel Info
I'm leaving to study abroad in Paris sometime soon.

Travel Tips
Even if it's understood it is not their language. They speak French and they expect you to speak it too. The resent Americans who assume that everyone knows English. Learn their language if you plan on being there for more than a couple of days and you wish to avoid certian hostility.

Others
Yes,but unfortunately the French have an attitude with Americans.Learn some French to get by.They will speak English more often to avoid you trying to speak with them in French.
I only was in Paris for about 4 hours in the airport, and I found that most I encountered spoke English well. English is spoken and understood almost everywhere, but since you will be there to study, you might want to learn French also. Make that part of the experience. Have a great time and good luck. And by the way, the previous answerer is right: the French can have attitudes with Americans and appear unfriendly. Maybe it is just a part of their culture we don't understand.
