Ireland was one of the few nations that was not conquered by Rome during its heydey, so its language wasn't Romanized, like most of the others in Europe. The use of Gaelic and the way of life in older Ireland is being preserved by an effort of the government through the establishment of certain areas in Ireland where Gaelic, and the older ways, are preserved. It is not commonly used throughout Ireland, but you can see music shows in Gaelic and most people know the Gaelic words to the old songs. Others Yes its the same , but its really technically 'Gaeilge' and not 'gaelic' though. Everyone in Ireland must learn it at school up to the age of 17-18. It is really only spoken in 'the Gaeltacht' ,regions in the west of Ireland; Cork, Kerry, Galway and Donegal mainly I'm Irish there are two types of Gaelic_Irish and Scottish. Both are spoken but the popularity is slowly fading. |
