Travel Tips
Is your question, "Where can I travel if I speak only English?" If so, my answer is, "Almost anywhere you want." I have never been very good at other languages, though I really have tried. Despite this, I have visited almost 30 countries on 3 continents, including 2 visits behind the Iron Curtain many years ago (and all the way across Russia alone on the TransSiberian Railroad just after Gorbachev came to power). The two most important words you MUST learn in the language of any country you want to visit are "Please" and "Thank you." Those words, RESPECT for the people and culture in which you are a guest, a GENUINE smile, endless patience, and an ability at charades will get you through an awful lot. DO NOT speak louder on the assumption that an inability to understand English is somehow to be equated with deafness (like my grandfather used to do)! You don't speak their language; why should you expect them to speak yours? Get yourself a good guide book (Lonely Planet) and the best phrase book you can afford... and study them BEFORE you go! Happy trails!
