Why can american dollars be spent throughout Canada (or at least throughout Ontario because thats where i've been) without an exchange and Canadian money (except for pennies and nickels) isn't accepted here? Is American money accepted in other countries as well (with out an exchange)? This may be completely stupid but I was curious. I live in michigan and travel to Canada often, I never have to exchange my money but when they give me change its canadian and I have to change it back when I come home. It's just been something that I've wondered.....

I've been to Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Peru, Germany, Guam, Qatar, and Ireland and everyone accepts dollars in those places. Most other countries won't accept bills that are wrinkled or ripped (even a tiny tear) though....so make sure you always keep mint condition bills for emergencies

Because the dollar is slowly taking over the world...a lot of countries accept dollars.

Because Canadian money is worth less than American money; therefore, shops in this country don't accept the Canadian money.
Sounds like the Canadians ripped you off, that's like Mexico they try to pretend they are the same value even though te Mexican dollar is much much less than an american dollar. They'll glady take your dollar without acknowledging the exchange rate.
