How is life in saudi arabia? |
Travel Info Hi my hubby is getting relocated to Saudi for a long term software project. I have a 3 yr old kid too so I wanted to know if there is any good schools for him and what the accomodations available. An overall scenario about all the usual topics such as living, food, & culture would be appreciated. Travel Tips I use to work in Saudi Arabia with my wife and kids for about 10 years, and it seemed not so difficult to stay there... Although their culture is kind of with strict rules and guidelines, its not an open country as where you are now... Kids school is not a problem coz there were a lots of International schools and you can ask your Embassy where you should be... Western, Asian foods are available on their markets except the pork meats... Accommodations is not a problem too... you have the best choice where you want to stay... Others crappy. Warm i think not good u can find food and all thing but saudi is fanatic are you a muslim ? if not forget everything ,they will not accept you. It depends on the terms of contract you husband has been offered. I mean schooling (pvt & int'l) may be a bomb there and local school may not be 100% english medium. Consider hospitalization expenses too. Ensure his package covers for schooling & medical expenses. I am also told women can't move freely without being accompanied by husband and should be appropriately dress (usually covered fully). My SF Team worked with the Saudi Special Forces after the1st Gulf War, so I can only give you my observations: - Women have no rights - You will have to wear a head scarf, and your shirt must be buttoned, and long arms. - If you wear a dress, ensure it goes down to your ankles. - Do not make eye to eye contact with an Arabic man in Saudi Arabia, you may give the wrong message. - Your husband should be provided with a suitable western style apartment/house. This is a requirement for most European/American companies working in Saudi Arabia. - There are western style restraunts and shopping markets, about 15% more expensive. - You can't even show any emotion while in the public, can't hold hands with your own husband. - Learn when the 5 Prayer Times are. There are several english newspapers with a schedule! DO NOT be out in public during Prayer Call....you will either be dragged to a Mosque, or arrested. - Arab men will move in front of you, push you out of the way, and you can not do anything about it. Allot of them do not even get around a western women. - Can't help you on schools. I think 3 years old in Saudi is not a good idea (just me personally). - You may be in a Western Compound. If so, there most likely have a swimming pool, etc. Inside these walls you can pretty much be who you are...outside of the walls you must follow the Islamic Laws. Get all your injections before you go. Drink only bottled water, food at the modern western supermarkets are ok. |
