Travel Info What are 'non-strike anywhere' matches? I'm looking at a box of safety matches that says "strike on box". Travel Tips At one time, all matches were "strike-anywhere". You could strike it on the ground, on the bottom of your shoe, or in comedy movies on someone's butt. The problem was that they were easily struck by accident. If you dropped a case of them, the impact could cause the entire case to burst into flames. To end this fire hazard, someone invented non-strike anywhere matches. These have to be struck on the strip glued to the box. They're much safer to have around. Others I'm not sure what they are called, but I've gotten them in south america. Those are the matches that you can strike on any rough surface, like brick, stone, even metal. They'll ignite when struck against any rough surface, which isn't all that safe if you think about it. Safety matches can only be ignited when rubbed against that special strip on the box/book of matches. Sorry, but I don't know the chemistry behind it, although the strike anywhere matches have a significant percentage of phosporous in them. |
