What is the best place to live in all of Great Brittain and why?

Travel Info
I want to stay there for a year or so, preferably in a static van, I will need a job very nearby the camp site and a small town as well. I have no clue where to look as I have never been there. I want to try to get around without a car and I also have a dog to think of. I want to take it slow for ayaer or so, I can work in tourism (I know 4 languages), or a factory.

Travel Tips
There's a bit of a conflict here...

The easy going lifestyle, campsites and small towns don't bode well for employment prospects and not having a car.

Job wise it's much easier to find employment in the large towns and cities than in rural areas but I'd steer clear of London, it has the highest enumployment in the UK and there's an awful lot of unscrupulous people who will take advantage of foreigners who don't know the 'system'.

Tourism work in the UK is very seasonal - mainly June to August with othr busy periods tying in with public holidays and school holidays. Scotland can have the advantage of an additional tourist season during the winter months (Jan & Feb in particular) bought on by winter sports enthusiasts although this can be hit and miss depending on snow conditions.

Depending which country you're coming from will determine whether you need a visa or not. If you do need a visa there are restrictions on how long you can stay and on working. If you're coming from one of the other EU countries there are no restrictions.

You'll probably find it very hard to work both in tourism and a factory as these tend to be in very different areas. Factory work is going to be found in the towns and cities but tourism work will be found in some seaside resorts such as Blackpool, Scarborough or Brighton and in the popular rural areas such as the Lake District, Snowdonia and the Yorkshire Dales.

You may find that it's a lot easier to move around - spend a few weeks doing casual work in one place then move on to somewhere else. Over the last 30 or so years this has become harder and harder with more restrictions being imposed. For many this used to be a way of life but nowadays it's all but been killed off.

As for which is the best place... I wouldn't say there's any one place that's better than any other. As I go through all the areas of the UK I can see advantages and disadvantages with all of them.

I don't want to disillusion you, what you're planning sounds like a great way to spend a year but the reality is that it's not all that practical. That's not to say that it's impossible - it may just be more of a struggle than you first imagined.

Perhaps when you arrive you could spend some time travelling to different areas and investgating possible job opportunities.

Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

Hurley on Thames in Berkshire. There is a trailer park right alongside the river Thames. The countryside around is fantastic with wonderful walks for people and dogs. (I have 2 large dogs and they are rarely on their leads). Hurley is approx 30 miles from London (takes about 45 minutes at off peak times to get there) 20 miles from Heathrow. There are small towns nearby Henley on Thames (4 miles) Marlow (3 miles). I can't advise on the work front but everyone needs gardeners and house keepers. AND the villagers are welcoming and friendly.
Look around, Wales and Cornwall have quite alot of static campsites, although some of the towns can be few and far between they have local bus services that will take you where you need to go, they are usually quite good about pets to.
Try Pembrokeshire. Lots of caravan parks and campsites right on the cliff or beach. For the dog it has a 187 mile cliff path - fantastic scenery. There's a local shuttle bus that goes regularly along the coast road. Plenty of work in the summer. Good luck!
Within staggering distance from a Pub

I'm in that shape a bit
Head to the north coast of Northern Ireland, plenty of hotel and bar work and good rail connections to Londonderry.
Also plenty of caravan sites in the area........and just the place to take it easy!
