A lot of the names of places have Ing, Ton and Thwaite in them, not just in Cumbria but throughout the whole of the UK.

Over the last few thousand years Britain has been occupied by he Danes, the Angles, the Saxons, the Romans etc and all have contributed to the language, these suffixes and many others can be traced back to various origins.

Ing is an Old English word meaning 'followers' so a town such as Reading takes it's name from the followers of Reada who settled there.

Ton is an Old Norse word that simply means 'farmstead' Most place names that end with 'ton' would have started as little more than a farm. There's many places with Norton or Sutton in the name (Chipping Norton or Sutton-Under-Whitestone-Cliffe... which simply translates as north farm and south farm.

Thwaite is another Old Norse word which means 'clearing' so somewhere such as Stonethwaite would have taken it's name from a stone in or near a clearing.

Depending which part of Cumbria you went to would determine how 'funny' they spoke. If you went to the main towns such as Carlisle, Penrith, Kendal or Keswick then they all speak 'normal' but of you talk to people from small villages and hamlets, especially farmers, they have a very broad accent much the same as they do in neighbouring Yorkshire.

The name Windermereingtonthwaites (if it existed) would probably have come from the followers of the water of Winder who lived in a farm in a clearing.

There's an article about British place names on Now Try Us (which looks eerily similar to Wikipedia)... http://www.nowtryus.com/article:list_of_...
