What are the white squares painted on main roads for?

Travel Info
You often see white squares painted on both lanes of the motorway or both directions of a single carriageway. They're about half a metre squared and at fairly regular intervals along the road.

Travel Tips
I am pretty sure I know what you are talking about, and they are so that an estimate of speed can be made without radar. For example, someone in a helpcopter could figure out how fast you are going by timing how long it takes for your car to pass each interval.

Others
they are for alian space ships to land on!!
