Sunderland, Nottingham and Leeds...University?

Travel Info
I'm planning to study abroad and was looking into the University of Leeds (my first choice), and then University of Sunderland and Nottingham. Can you guys tell me about each of the cities, and which you think are better? I'm getting a weird vibe about Sunderland, like it might be extremely boring or something, so I just wanted to double check. Also, if it make any kind of a difference, I'm Chinese and I wasn't sure if there was a specific part of the UK that might be unfriendly to certain races. Thanks! I was also thinking about Sheffield, but I heard it smells like sulfur?

Travel Tips
Nihao, I study in Sheffield and it does NOT smell of sulfur here. It used to be an industrial city, but it's now the greenest city in the UK

If you want to know what student life is in Sheffield, ask other (Chinese) students in Sheffield. The University of Sheffield has a service called "Student2Student".

As for Leeds, it's a lovely place to study. I have a friend studying there. Good shopping. Source(s): Student2Student

Other Travel Tips
I would say Leeds is the best. Sunderland is a depressing town and nottingham has the highest gun crime per head in the country. Leeds is quite trendy now and has a great social scene.
Sunderland is a grim ugly industrial city, but is close to Newcastle which is very nice.

Nottingham is quite soulless in addition to the high rates of gun crime.

Sheffield doesn't smell. In fact two of my sisters went to uni there and loved it

I live in York, which has two unis. The University of York, and York St John.York is a beautiful city steeped in history, and students come from all over the world to study here.

Leeds is your best bet out of the ones you've mentioned, it is the most diverse and cosmopolitan. And it's in Yorkshire.
Of the four Sheffield is the nicest citywith the friendliest people. Nottingham has the most crime and should be avoided. Leeds is expensive for absolutely no reason as it's nothing special. Sunderland is a lively place and is really near the coast. There are nice beaches 10 mins drive away. Have you thought about Newcastle?
My order of preference would be:
Sheffield
Newcastle
Sunderland
Leeds

Nottingham
I feel I should stick up for Nottingham!

I'm a first year phys student at Nottingham, and I haven't been affected by crime at all. As with all cities there are a few areas to avoid, but there's no reason to go to those areas anyway. Nottingham is actually average on the list of serious crime - Leeds and Manchester were rated higher - it just gets bad press as the head of some gun crime preventions unit works in Nottingham & the media seem to like the irony...

As for it being souless, I'd have to heartily disagree. Nottingham is dominated by students and therefore it seems that most of the city is geared towards us and as a result its bustling and vibrant. There's loads of student pubs, clubs, cinemas etc - you'll never be bored. Theres also plenty of music venues - Nottingham Arena holds all the major tours, and if you're into Indie music then Rock City.

Nottingham also has a good mix between old and new - we're steeped in tradition with the close association with Robin Hood, and we've also got a castle and ancient caves to boot. On the more modern front, Market Square is being re-developed to go along with new shopping centres, a tram system, cinemas, playhouses etc etc.

I'm guessing that you'll go for university-run accomodation, at least for the first year, which means that its more than likely that you'll be staying on campus. This is where I think Nottingham is head and shoulders above the rest. We've got a stunning campus, with a massive lake and a massive area of open-space called the Downs, which has provided an excellent are for sun-bathing in the last couple of days. Take a look at the campus - its impossible not to fall for it & its one of the main reasons I came to Nottingham:

I've loved every minute of my life since I've moved to Nottingham. Ignore the bad reputation - its been totally blown out of proportion - Nottingham is a lovely city & I'm sure you'd have a fabulous time if you came here...

ps. We're very accomodating to foreign students & we have a very large international student base... and those on my course are mainly from China/Malaysia...
If god was going to give the UK an enema, he would stick the tube in Sunderland. The whole of the North East with the exception of Bigg Market is twinned with Baghdad.

Leeds was one of the few cities in the second world war which Hitler didnt bomb, and thats because he was going to make it the capital of Nazi Britain when he invaded. That tells you something about the people there.

Nottingham is the UK gun crime capital, and the female student population outnumbers the males by three to one, so lots of competition there.

So Sheffield it is then!!

Not a pretty city at all, but good student life so I believe and surrounded by some very nice moorland.
