New York vs Los Angeles? |
Travel Info Which Metro is better? I vote New York; Less Smog Lighter Traffic, even though Long Island has suburbs spanning 80 miles away, and over 2 times the population of L.A. The reason is that most people in the suburbs work within the Suburbs, New York City's main CBD, spans across a large Island. There is also a second CBD, Downtown Brooklyn. The main reason why NY has better traffic is due to it's railroad system. New York isn't nearly as polluted as L.A New York has 3 major skylines, and two across the River, Hackensack and New Jersey. More Jobs, unfortunately due to L.A. close proximaty to the border, illegal imminigrants took a lot of jobs. New York actually has 4 distinct Seasons. More things to do like better entertainment, nightlives, shopping choices. Not as much stuck up people as L.A., if by any chance you like to be around stuck up people, you can go out a few miles east, to the Hamptons. New York's Beaches are good, but not as good as L.A. Travel Tips NEW YORK! I'm from the South (Virginia to be exact) and I have spent vacations in both NY City and L.A. New York is MUCH better than the so-called "City of Angels." I have no desire to go back to L.A., but I can't wait to travel back to the Big Apple! Others LA. the fun place...better than NY,,, dont go by statastics... Neither. Chicago is the best city. Much cleaner than both and less crowded. Also come Sunday we will be the Super Bowl Champs!! I can't stand LA but better things about LA are: 1. The weather. Don't have nasty winter to put up with, nor hot humid summers. Generally pleasant year around. Lot more sun in LA than NYC. 2. More variety in scenery. It has hills. NYC is a lot flatter. 3. Better mexican food. Harder to find a decent burrito in NYC. Real objective way to ask a question! You obviously know the answer you are looking for considering the additonal details you added. The two cities are very different and it all depends on what you like. NY is just as polluted as LA, just not the air. You telling me that there isn't that much pollution with New Jersey less than a mile away? NJ has the most toxic sites in america. Go and swim in the husdon or east river and tell me it's not polluted. CA has the nation's strictest environmental laws in the nation, not NY. LA has a lot more than 3 skylines too; downtownn, Century City, Mid Wilshire, Glendale, Irvine, Newport Beach, Anaheim and the Platinum triangle. Not everyone likes seasons; they're overrated anyways. LA has plenty of good jobs; illegals take the min wage jobs so unless that's what your after illegal immigrants aren't huting your chances. LA has just as many things to do as NY, it is the entertainment capital of the world. Not everyone in LA is stuck up either, it depends on what type of people you hang out with. Hollywood/entertainment types tend to have that stuck up, snobbyness. Plenty of stuck up people no matter where you go, are people on Park Ave really down to earth?? Also it seems that a lot more people from New York move out to Southern CA than the other way around. So I can't imagine it's that great when you have tons of people from the area moving here. I''ve met tons of New Yorkers and people from New Jersey in SoCal. And NJ is New York just like Orange County is LA. Yes it's expensive here, but for a reason, people want to live here. Obviously demand for housing in NY isn't as great b/c it's not as desirable. Also I don't know where you get your facts from but some of them are just wrong. LA does not have the highest suicide rate and that BS you said about being pretty and living in the hills; why don't you actually come to LA and see what it's like rather than getting some stupid stereotypes from lame a*s TV shows like The Hills or 90210, that crap is fake. LA does not have a limit on high rises b/c they can be constructed safety. Tokyo has a much higher earthquake risk than LA and look at all of its skyscrapers. You mention MTV, CNN, and Fox. But all the major television and movie studios are in LA and CNN is based in Atlanta, not NY. Universal Studios, Warner Brothers studios, Paramount Pictures studios, and pretty much every major movie company has offices in LA. NY has bizzards which are natural disasters b/c people die in them and they declare a state of emergency. And maybe you weren't aware but NY does have a slight risk of earthquakes. Not strong ones, but a 5.0 quake will do 20x as much damage as it would in LA. You talk about LA being doomed for economic disaster b/c of earthquakes, but wasn't it NY that experianced an economic downturn after 9/11. LA isn't nearly as big of a terrorist target as NY, so what's better a natural or man made disaster? It all depends what you like as I said before. If you like the dense, urban, fast pace NY lifestyle then of course you'll like it more. If you want to the more laid back, outdoors lifestyle of LA then it's a better fit for you. Both cities have tons of stuff to offer people. It all depends on what you are looking for. I have to second the person who said "Chicago". Chicago is a truly beautiful city. Both New York and Los Angeles fail to make the most of what could be gorgeous settings. That said, there are things I like about both New York and Los Angeles. If I had to vote, though, I'd pick L.A. I find it fascinating that you think New York is more diverse than Los Angeles. Outside of Queens, New York comes across (at least to a visitor) as a very black and white city. L.A., with its huge numbers of Hispanics and Asians really does seem to have the whole world in one place. I also like the architecture in Los Angeles better than that of New York. New York is a city of gray boxes, and its skyscrapers hide each other and create dark canyons downtown. The architecture in L.A. is much more vibrant and colorful, and you can notice the individual skyscrapers (which DO exist--in fact it's lower buildings that are more of a problem in earthquakes). Both cities have outstanding entertainment and shopping options, though what they are differs in the two places. Both also have a lot of stuck-up people, plus a large majority of people who are very friendly. You are definitely correct that New York is less polluted than Los Angeles and that it has better rail transportation (though L.A. is improving a lot in that regard). I'd also give New York the edge in beaches. Rockaway is an awesome beach right in the city, and the beaches on Long Island and the Jersey Shore are at least as good as anything in California. I also personally prefer seasons (another advantage of Chicago over either of the cities you mention), but others like generally good weather. L.A. does have earthquakes (tsunamis really aren't a great problem in the city itself, which is mostly well inland). New York, however, was named by the Weather Channel as the potential site of the greatest weather disaster America could face, a hurricane that would make Katrina seem tame. Its low-lying position also makes it more vulnerable than L.A. to rising sea levels from global warming. Then there's the matter of expense. You compare housing costs in bad neighborhoods--strange to begin with; it would seem middle class would be a better comparison. You also compare unlike homes. While its residents are poorer, Compton looks much more like Queens or Staten Island than the Bronx. The Bronx is mostly rowhouses and apartment buildings, while Compton is single-family homes with yards. The Bronx is more like east Hollywood, which would be a cheaper place to live than Compton. Having been to both cities, to me L.A. seemed a much cheaper place to visit than New York. The fact that the buses and subways cost $2 a ride in New York with $7 day passes, while it's $1.25 a ride in L.A. with $3 day passes gives you some idea of comparative costs. Again, I really like both cities. If I had to choose one to live in, though, I'd pick L.A. What about Vegas...Atlantic City isnt comparable. More reasons to love L.A.= Santa Barbara, Mexico, Star Gazing and amazing night clubs |
