Travel Info What are the coolest places to visit in Greece? Travel Tips If you're sick of the whole tzatziki-moussaka-zorba the greek thing, try visiting the REAL athens. Go see the new OAKA stadium, where the Olympics took place.the whole area there is a must see (thank Santiago Calatrava) Stay at a designer-boutique hotel outside of Athens.It's pricey, but quieter and safer than the downtown center. Sleep all day then enjoy the hundreds of live clubs at the southern suburbs, till the break of dawn. Go to Kolonaki and get some decent (overpriced) coffee, then choose a classy restaurant like "48", "ST'ASTRA", "MILOS" or sth like that. Don't just eat the same gyros-souvlaki you can get everywhere in the world at some greek deli. Get a jetferry and head straight to Mykonos, just make sure you have a hotel reservation. Or maybe get your friends together and rent a sailing boat, to get the real Aegean Sea feeling. It sure is less expensive. Don't miss Santorini. It's like going to Switzerland and miss the Alps. Ah... the breathtaking view of the caldera from a pool in the cliffs in Ia. Go to Kefallonia. See the best beaches in Greece, Myrtos and Porto Katsiki (get a sneak preview of the isle in Captain Corelli's Mandolin). Crete is OK, it's great for low budget tourists. Lots of archaeological sites to see. Others Of course, the gratest place there is Athens, there is the Parthenon, and many beautiful things. Also I recommend to go to Santorini, and Iraklion, in Creta island.Cyprus, that is near from Greece,(like 2 hours of flight from Athens)is cool too. Do Athens in a day or two, then hop on a ferry and head toward the islands!!! My favorites are Mykonos, Ios, and Santorini, although Naxos and Samos are nice too. Ios tends to be for a younger crowd. Mykonos is very expensive. Santorini has the most diversity and best beaches. Samos is only a 45 minute ferry ride from Turkey. You can do a day trip if you want. I've heard Athens has seriously deteriorated, but you should probably do the historical tours there that others recommend. I was just in Mykonos and Santorini and they're absolutely incredible. Mykonos - big party place. really friendly people in the marina, great shops. They have a "little italy" area that's very cute. And the beaches are incredible. party every day at 5pm. the clubs are also very good. Santorini - the main town of Thira is gorgeous. Again, great shopping and restaurants with excellent white wine and Vinsanto dessert wine (try Archipelagos overlooking the caldera). A great side trip - take a bus north to Oia. small town on the north side of the island. gorgeous views. You can't go wrong with those two places. Would do about 2-3 days in Mykonos, 2 days in Santorini, 2 days in Athens to round out your week. Even better if you have more time. except athens and the islands of the Aegean sea visit the ionian islands:Corfu,leukada,zakyntho... are really beautifull. of course crete is wonderfull too. greece is a very beautifull country,try visiting as many places as possible.thessaloniki(the co-capital city) is a really nice city too!! |
