Greece? What are the must see's there? |
Travel Info I want to learn mostly about the culture. What specific things do i need to get to know? Travel Tips Many traditions are preserved in the Greece villages, especially in the more isolated ones. In ancient times, dance, song, and music were all integral parts of the theater. In fact, the Greek word 'XOPOC', (HOROS), referred to both dance and song. The English words chorus, chorale, choir, and choreography all come from this same Greek word. Greek literature ancient heritage spans poetry, drama, philosophical and historical treatises, and travelogues. Homer (9th century BC), author of The Iliad and The Odyssey, was the greatest ancient Greek writer. Much of Greece's culinary heritage can be sourced to the 400 years of Turkish rule, particularly appetizers such as testis (cucumber and yoghurt dip) and octopus pickled in lemon juice and olive oil. Cheap snacks such as souvlaki (skewered, grilled meat in pita bread) and spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie) are easy to find. Popular main dishes include moussakas (eggplant baked with minced meat and b茅chamel sauce), stuffed tomatoes, and freshly grilled seafood. The mainstay of the Greek diet is the ubiquitous horiatiki salata (country salad), consisting of cucumber, tomatoes, onions, feta cheese and olives. Greek yogurt is delicious and sold everywhere. Typical Greek drinks include retsina, ouzo, tsipouro and raki. THE MUST SEE PLACE: The Meteor's I hope this was helpful Others I heard there are castles there. I don't know for sure. And I know there are beautiful stone houses. Also go to some gardens too. They are so pretty. Make sure you go to the Acropolis, in Athens. There are many great ruins to see on the island of Crete. Also, take a drive out in the country and look at small towns. Go to Mani and Monovosia. In the small towns there are many small, family owned businesses. Some towns have a "plateea", or town square. Everyone gathers there at night and talks with old friends. Be respectful, and don't use a loud voice in fancy restaurants there. Act like the Greeks around you that are your age; you don't want to be labeled as a disrespectful foreigner. Some good foods: -tsatsiki (spread on bread) -pastitio -yemestes (stuffed tomato or stuffed pepper... really good!) -calamari -octopothi -anything else that you think looks good :) I hope you have fun :) I go to Greece every summer. Modified 1 year ago Greece is beautiful. Athens is so nice, they really worked hard to make it perfect for the Olympics. Korinthos is also a nice place to visit.....lots of interesting ruins, not so many people like at the Acroplois. Swimming in the ocean is just perfect! So warm! Have fun! First you should visit Acropolis, an ancient temple in the center of Athens. Then there are a lot of museums wherever you go in Greece. For me you should visit Crete too, there are two fabulous ancient palates...of course there is another temple in Naxos, the Greek people name it:Portara, there you will see and a beautiful sunset! In addition there are great palates in the town of Thessaloniki. But if you come to Greece you will see except the archaeological places a lot of traditional villages! And you will eat a variety of traditional foods like tsatsiki, gemista, moussakas etc.Waiting you!!! |
