Hand painted pottery? approx. 3"X4" signed "ARIA METEOPA"? |
Travel Info flea market buy, colorful hand-painted on odd shaped material; approx. 3" X 4", hand signed "ARIA METEOPA" (?) Travel Tips I'm not quite sure about this, but one possibility is that it comes from Greece. There's a place called "Meteora" (in the Greek alphabet, "P" = "R"). The strange thing is that there would be an "R" in "Aria," since "R" isn't in the Greek alphabet. Meteora is a fascinating place, where there are medieval-era monasteries built on the tops of (and sometimes perched precipitously on and over) natural monoliths. It's a popular tourist site, but a little off the beaten track. Another possibility is that someone just didn't put write in the whole "R" in "Meteora" and that it's not Greek at all, but Italian. In that case, the phrase could mean "meteorite" ("meteora nell'aria" is the meteorite when it's falling through the air, dissolving in the atmosphere). (A meteor is the rock when it's in space or burning up; whatever lands is called meteorite.) You said that the piece is odd-shaped - could it actually be a piece of meteorite that's been painted? [Note: I was going on the orthography that the questioner gave, but agree wholeheartedly with the person below. That makes MUCH more sense, that the second letter in the first word looks more like a LOWER-CASE "r" - which is an UPPER-CASE gamma (G) in Greek. "Hagia" means "holy" or "saintly" in Greek. The first letter would have been aspirated; that's why we add the "h." (Lives of saints are called "hagiographies.") All the stuff about Italian is completely wrong; you've got your best answer below, I think.] Others it's not ARIA METEOPA but 螒螕螜螒 螠螘韦螘惟巍螒, that means Holly Meteora, it's a place in central Greece with a lot of monasteries on huge rocks you can see the place there: http://www.meteora-greece.com/ Islasdelegeo is right. Meteora (may TAY oh rah) means rocks, and they are truly incredible. You might have seen them in a couple of Bond movies. It is probably not valuable though. There's a lot of kitch sold in Greece at tourist places like Meteora. |
