Could someone please tell me the top 10 places to visit in Athens, besides the Acropolis? |
Travel Info I'll be in Athens for 4 days next month (June). It will help me plan my stay if I knew where to go. My wife and I are mostly interested in seeing historical places, museums and ancient buildings. Travel Tips 1. Temple of Olympian Zeus 2. Temple of Hephaestus 3. Greek Parliament 4. Kallimarmaro Stadium 5. The Parthenon 6. The Athens Planetarium 7. Lykavittos the tallest hill of the city 8. National Archaeological Museum of Athens 9. The old campus of the University of Athens, is one of the finest buildings in the city. 10. East terminal, at former Hellenikon airport 11. The Athens Olympic Velodrome, Others After the Acropolis or the Parthenon theres not much else to see really, Ive been there and know this for a fact Parthenon, Agora, Syntagma Square, Kallimarmaro Stadium and thats about it really! don't listen to the ignorant first reply, i'm sure it's a typical american which went up to the acropolis then straight down to mcdonalds. wow, "i know this for a fact"? is than an axiome? here's a bit of culture for you: aside from the acropolis you have to see the agora which are other beautifully preserved ancient greek structures. the olympic stadium (the old one, for the original olympics) is worth a look as well. the piraeus is the port area which is quite nice to see. right by the acropolis and the agora is monastirakis, an area of small streets that looks a bit like a flea market is very nice to walk through. the temple of olympian zeus is a bit too destroyed but it's historically important. not far from the olympic stadium. There's a couple of important museums of both old and recent greek history which are definetly worth a look. can't remember the names straight away so google those. If you're bored with that i suggest taking (can't remember which) the metro line to Kifisias, which is the posh suburb of athens. it's nothing touristy but has some nice streets, restaurants and shops worth looking at. Bored with that? take a day ferry to the closer islands like poros or hydra which are 1)much less touristy than the aegean islands like mykonos and the likes, but 2) preserve that fantastic white-blue architecture, clear blue waters, nightlife, daylife, beaches, it's fantastic. been to greece thrice with greek friends which showed me around what has to be seen. Modified 11 months ago there are alot of different places to visit but i would try the search engine and see what different places there are. |
