Why is the Omonia part of greece dangerous?

Travel Tips
Omonia is a part of Athens.
Omonia is considered one of the most dangerous parts of Athens due to both a bad reputation and ongoing troubles. However, the situation has drastically improved since the renovation of the entire city for the Olympics.
During the day, Omonia is considered harmless only because there are many people, big crowds, patrol policemen and regular city transport circulation. However, during the night, Omonia shows its ugly face. The main reason for this (and this has troubled city officials for decades, almost) is the centralization of persistent hookers/prostitutes, aggressive pimps, drunken immigrants, junkies, sex shops, peep shows, brothels, strip bars, serious drug addicts, drug dealers, lunatics, pickpockets, beggars etc. The list is long and having a bad name does not help Omonia which is why the majority of the population here is poor and/or not Greek and unless radical changes are pursued 鈥?no advancement is in sight. Real estate prices are very low 鈥?no one can afford to move anywhere else and no one wants to live there. This gives you an unfortunate whirlpool. There is no need to panic, it isn鈥檛 hell unleashed but do try to avoid walking through the narrow streets which emerge from: 3rd Septembriou, Patission, Agiou Konstantinou, Athinas, Pireos, etc... in order to ensure safety. Now, if you鈥檙e with a large group of people, you鈥檙e fine, no need to fret since your not in any way a potential victim.
All in all 鈥?Athens is a safe city, but demands precaution. Especially, Omonia. Just be on your guard and that鈥檚 it. Go see Omonia, it鈥檚 interesting in its eerie way but do not choose a hostel/motel/hotel in this area since most owners are known for organizing (believe it or not) robbery in the rooms of their very own guests -literally.

P.S. AVOID CABS! The city transport system does seem complicated at first glance but it鈥檚 not and you can easily find your way around especially with the metro/electro tram. You also avoid traffic jams and the sometimes unbearable heat. Some taxi drivers are honest and are not very expensive (on the contrary, usual cab cost is cheap!) but most will, whence realizing that you are a foreigner that does not know his/her way around, take an advantage of you鈥?and make you pay double, triple etc or just drive you around 30-45min longer than necessary. Source(s): no source except for my own experience (have lived in Athens for a long time and have close family in Athens for over 15 years)

Other Travel Tips
I would say it looks different and for some people might look dangerous, but really it is not! Of course, compared to other places, Omonia has many not good looking and addicted people, but, ...
Also, more people around there are immigrants.
Although the sense is not that great, in Omonia, anymore, I feel safe! As we know, IRS and other state "institutions" are more dangerous than a few strangers enjoying the great climate of Greece!
Some times what we see is not true! Omonia looks dangerous but it is not! It is strange, since there are many immigrants, but never something happen to me or friends of mine!
We might see "lost" people but they are not dangerous!
Baby got a.. is right but every country has its dangerous town
Athens is a safe city.At least bombs do not explode around the city and planes do not crash on the Acropolis or the Parliament...
Omonoia square is a busy district of dontown Athens and during day time is pretty safe.In the night it may be dangerous but for example the Boullon Pak in Paris is much more dangerous in the night comparing with Omonoia Square.
