Travel Tips
tripadvisor is the best website to use for both photos and reviews. However, I would not recommend Paralia Katerini to anyone. I'm not a snob or an elitist or hard to satisfy, BUT Paralia Katerini could as well be well called "the as#hole of the World". It's dirty, has a majority of cloudy/rainy days (which no one tells you in advance- EVER), the beaches are gray and the sea is filled with plastic, bottles, rubbish, rotten vegetables etc and the sand full of poo and smells of piss, has broken-down, filthy hotels, NOTHING to see, 4 clubs (in one, some random stranger tried to SELL my friend to some guy without her knowing!!!), disgusting beaches (I have to repeat this), most of the population is Albanian and Serbian (I'm Serbian, but these people over there are obnoxious), everything is expensive as if you're in Athens or Corfu and etc. At every corner, someone tries to get money out of you i.e. we went to an apartment hotel near the beach and were surprised how cheap it was. Then we found out that three lamps do not work (I鈥檓 not talking about light bulbs-those can be replaced), the sheets were stained, a window pain was unhinged and one of the beds broken. We immediately complained AND filled out a form for it. The owner promised to replace/fix everything necessary and kindly apologized. Ah! The deceiver in disguise. After a week, everything was in the same exact condition it was in when we arrived. The owner hadn't changed a thing. We packed our bags and wanted to leave but he refused to give us our documents back claiming that we broke everything and needed to pay him 870 euros!!! Hysteria emerged, and we frantically tried to argue with him. He wouldn't budge and also claimed he had witnesses (all neighbors) who said we came drunk home every night bringing dozens of people into our rooms (completely not true). We struggled for over two hours to get our point across but he wouldn't hear of it. In the end, he called the police who were quite uninterested in our side of the story. They "kindly" requested us to pay "or else...". We were in shock and continued to be in disbelief when the owner wrote up a receipt for all the items summing up to the infamous 870euros (!!!). At the end of the day, we agreed to pay half and they were all quite satisfied and pleased with themselves. I cried on the way home to Serbia and was a nervous wreck only to find out (in the months that followed) that this is considered a regular event in Paralia Katerini 鈥?it鈥檚 a way for the locals to get some extra cash. Just to mention, we witnessed over bloody and brutal 20 fights in town over the week we spent there (later we found out that skin head and neo-Nazi tourists are quite the attraction here and love to stir up trouble with the locals). I must admit, I've heard of people being satisfied with Katerini but I've also seen/heard horrific experiences. All in all, Greece offers you so many other resorts to enjoy for the same price and all of them have a fantastic reputation.
HOWEVER, I have to compliment this particular restaurant located on the main street which had exquisite home cuisine (sea food, mostly) and was surprisingly cheap and welcoming. I congratulate them for managing to be such an contradiction to the revolting atmosphere of Paralia Katerini. I know some might be offended by this text and I do believe that there are honest people in this little town, but, sad to say, I have acquainted only a couple.
