Hi,
You may want to try the downtown area "centro" around the "Plaza de Armas". Within walking distance you can visit the famous Cathedral, the Government building with some fine examples of Mexican murals and the Hospicio Caba帽as, also inside are some very fine examples of Mexican murals. The Hospicio Caba帽as also has a museum. All of these buildings as well as the downtown area are good examples of colonial and early 20th century architecture. Inside the government building as you enter on the right is the tourist office. They speak english and you can get a bit more info there. Hope this helps.
