What do pilots mean when they say "flight attendants, prepare for cross-check?" what is a cross-check?

Travel Tips
When a pilot or lead flight attendant says "cross check and all call" this is generally done either right before take off, or right after landing. What this refers to is the flight attendants making certain that exit doors are prepared for either departure or arrival. Prior to flight, attendants arm doors so that in the event they are opened in an emergency, exit slides will automatically deploy. However, on landing, the attendants must disarm the slides so they do not inflate when ground crews open the doors for arrival.

Others
I believe they check and close the doors of the plane.
They also check to make sure everyone has their seatbelts on, trays up, etc.
What the others have said, but below is a link to an interview with an airline captain; she also answers some other questions.

Cross-check means to have the flight attendents make one last look out the windows to make sure the plane will not hit anything, also cross check means to look over ones back, so they are looking over the backs of the pilots. This is standard practive because not all airports (like in USA) have wing walkers and directors on the ground. Many times in Oslo, its so cold that nobody is on the runway.
they make sure all the seatbelts r on and that the overhead storage is securly closed...
