Is it safe to eat meat and produce when traveling to countries other than your own?

Travel Info
I am from the US. So many people I know have gotten sick while vacationing in other countries. What are the chances really that you will get sick. And likewise if people come to the US from other countries.

Travel Tips
It depends on the country you are going to.

Fruit: If you are going to a country where you cannot drink the water and must drink bottled water the rule of thumb is to NOT eat fruit unless you peel it yourself. (also remember that not all countries have the same pesticide laws we have)

Meat : Meat is usually okay if you know the source and how it was prepared. It should be cooked thoroughly and have been stored in refrigeration. If you are in a situation where you are going to eat from a street vendor select one that is popular and the food has not been sitting there for a long period of time exposed.

The CDC website has great travelers information

Bon Voyage!

Others
I think it depends on which countries you go to. Obviously health standards are going to be higher in developed countries compared to third world countries.
