Why was indy built on its current site.? |
Travel Info The river is to narrow, so it wasn't a major shipping port. Why did people settle in the middle of indiana. Travel Tips Mattrobertson answer was good, but I would like to mention that the White River was actually a major throughfare - it was very navigational with canoes and other small boats so it was kind of like an Interstate through the Wilderness Indiana was at the time. And it probably helped that they were in William Conners house when the decision was made. He was a pioneer, trader, his first wife was a Delaware, founder of Noblesville, the house is located in Fishers now, Conner Prairie museum, and all that is just north east (on the white river) from downtown Indy. And PS: not very many folks were living in its area when it was founded. Native americans some of them, but really not many europeans at all. Was pretty empty still. Hoosiers in the Northern part of the state complained that it was unfair that they had to travel all the way to the south (10 day buggy ride) to do offical business. They eventually moved the capitol to Indianapolis because of its central location in Indiana. Because it is the middle of the state and for its historical value. It was also a major water highway back in the day. That area is also one of only a few places in the state that has a large number of people living there. |
