they'll be there in early january. what are sights and places for first time visitors to tokyo do?

Travel Tips
Start at Meiji Shrine (Meiji-jingu) -- really maybe the only great cultural/tourist site that is IN Tokyo since you can't see anything but the gate of the Imperial Palace -- then walk a ways out through Harajuku zone and down Omote-Sando, the main shopping boulevard for the fashion victim. If you keep going across the main Aoyama-dori crossing, you come to the new Prada building, which is a kind of funky modern architectural landmark by stylish Swiss architects Herzog + de Meuron (if anyone cares...think they are the same firm that created Tate Modern). Anyway, lots to look at all along the way even if it is mostly the same stuff on sale in Bond Street on or Union Square.

From there it is not far to Shibuya, the "youth" entertainment zone--head towards "Hachiko" exit at main station and just wonder around. There's a famous, one-of-a-kind hobby/hardware/do it yourself store called "Tokyu Hands"

On the opposite side of the ring "Yamanote" line is Akihabara, which is the main electronics shopping zone and very entertaining to walk around. Then there's also the "Asakusa" district, which is around an old shrine and has a more traditional feel. Although traditional is a relative thing.

The other thing to check on is to see if Kabuki is playing at Kabukiza -- you can buy a cheap seat for not very much, get an audio guide, and sit in for as much or as little as you like. People wonder in and out, chat, it's pretty informal, not at all like Western opera. It's in the Ginza, not far from that Four Seasons, and wondering around Ginza also good as more glitzy shops, etc. They should take the "Hato Bus", they are bus tours that have different itineraries and routes - they are guided tours that bring you to Tokyo Tower, NHK Studios, etc. They hit all the major attractions.
